DAVID EZELL BIO
As President of Heart Wind Music David Ezell is continuing a lifetime of spiritual study and involvement, and a lifetime of helping others feel the joy of making music. David grew up as a Christian Scientist. As an adult has studied spiritual principles taught by Unity, Centers for Spiritual Living (formerly Religious Science) and Course in Miracles, and he is a student of religious history.
David has a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with Emphasis in Viola Performance from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, and a Master of Music in Composition from the University of South Carolina, where he specialized in electronic music. He also has a Doctor of Sacred Music from Lighthouse Theological Seminary in Manning, SC. Post-graduate studies have mostly been in jazz. Since high school he has been producing arrangements and compositions useful to the musicians he has worked with. Before founding Heart Wind Music, he was an orchestra and band director in schools and colleges, retiring in 2006. During the latter part of his teaching career, he became a church music director. He served from 1990 to 2016 at Unity of Columbia (SC), and for two years at Queen City Center for Spiritual Living in Charlotte. He is now devoting his time to composing, arranging and publishing. He remains Artistic director of the Columbia Community Orchestra, and is a co-founder of the sextet JAM (Jazz Awakening Mind).
As a member of the Music Resource Team at Unity Worldwide Ministries, David administers UWM's Online Music Library at this website. For a dozen years he served as arranger/conductor for instrumental ensembles at the annual Posi Music Festival, which is organized and produced by emPower Music & Arts, and co-sponsored by Unity Worldwide Ministries.
At Unity of Columbia, David developed a music program that included the eclectic band Southern Light, the adult choir, children's choir, jazz ensemble and several other instrumental ensembles. David enjoyed playing keyboards, clarinet and sax, as well as several string instruments, for services.
Highlights of David's teaching career include conducting student orchestras at Carnegie Hall and in Germany, Austria, Canada, the Bahamas and half of the counties in SC. He developed orchestra programs in African-American, urban schools in Columbia and Charleston, and at Benedict College. He is also the founding artistic director of the Columbia Community Orchestra. He is married to Anne Ezell, also a retired school orchestra director, who works with him on many musical projects.
In the 1990's David developed an interest in computers, and in musical applications. He became expert at the Macintosh program HyperCard, a predecessor of PowerPoint, and taught teacher recertification classes in interactive mulitmedia.
David uses his experiences as a spiritual seeker, musical leader, and computer specialist, in producing this Heart Wind Music website.
